The Derwent River Tour

A tour for the adventurers, paddle downstream through grade 2 rapids into the mighty Derwent and take in sweeping views of the iconic Wellington Range.

The Derwent Valley day trip begins with a pickup in New Norfolk, 30 minutes northwest of Hobart. We commence our tour with a short scenic drive into the Upper Derwent Valley, offering views of Mount Field National Park and surrounding lush farmlands.

Our 3.5 hour kayaking tour commences at the mouth of the Styx River. Paddle downstream into the mighty Derwent to take in sweeping views of the iconic Wellington Range, pass under historic railway bridges and perhaps even see a platypus, a sea eagle or some acrobatic trout before stopping for a fresh gourmet riverside lunch.

After lunch, the Derwent builds in momentum and tranquillity gives way to adventure as we encounter the first of three rapids at Broken Bridge, a novice slalom course popular with the local clubs and community. In between, serenity resumes fleetingly before the biggest challenge, the natural rollercoaster of the Train Bridge which is sure to get the adrenaline running!

The tour ends at the fittingly named jetty “Paradise”, where group photos are taken and light refreshments are offered before making our way back to New Norfolk.
