The Lake Pedder Tour
|
The Lake Pedder day tour begins with pickups in Westerway National Park and Maydena, approximately one hour from Hobart. A half-hour scenic drive through the spectacular Florentine Valley descends into the gateway of the magnificent Southwest National Park encompassing over six hundred thousand hectares of wild, inspiring country and forms part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. We stop for morning tea, followed by a short walk through an ancient myrtle forest to discover some of the unique and indigenous plants and small creatures that call this place home.
The tour continues onto the unsealed Scott’s Peak Road offering spectacular mountain views of the Arthur and Franklin Ranges, Lake Pedder and the highest peak in Southern Tasmania, Mount Anne. We will take a pause at Red Knoll lookout where you will be taken aback by breathtaking 360 degree views of the mountains and lakes. Red Knoll offers opportunities for incredible photos and our guide will offer a brief introduction to the history of the area. After a brief descent down the knoll, experience a once in a lifetime 1.5 hour guided kayaking trip in the calm and pristine waters of Lake Pedder. Circumnavigate part of Scott’s Peak or explore the remote white and pink pebbled quartzite beaches and soak in the silent wonder of the unspoiled surrounds. Lake Pedder is rich with giant trout and bird life can be varied. Guests often sight rosellas, honeyeaters, native wrens and robins, thornbills and currawongs. The wilderness is touted by some as a possible place for a breeding population of Tasmanian Tigers to have survived since its official extinction in 1936. On your return, feast on a gourmet lunch prepared by our fully qualified chef. Taste a selection of top quality local produce whilst enjoying one of the world’s most spectacular backdrops. For those who are interested, we also provide the opportunity to stop and explore Camp Florentine, the longest running blockade in Tasmania’s history to gain firsthand knowledge of the struggle protecting our most precious natural old-growth forests. The tour ends with drop offs at Mount Field National Park, Westerway and Maydena. Details
